Continental names Infineon as its Supplier of the Year

July 29, 2019 by David Edwards

Automotive parts giant Continental has named chipmaker Infineon as its “Supplier of the Year”.

Continental launches series production of technologies for robo-taxis

July 23, 2019 by Anna

Continental’s technology for driverless vehicles will be in production for the first time in French company EasyMile’s EZ10 autonomous shuttle. Continental has held a stake in this driverless vehicle manufacturer since 2017.

Driverless robo-taxis will become an important part of mobility in urban centers, helping to reduce traffic congestion and increase efficiency, says the company.

Driverless transport systems of this kind are still rare. Small autonomous shuttle buses with room for several passengers – which also qualify as robo-taxis – have driven on short, straightforward public routes during pilot projects and in designated areas at airports, hospitals, universities, and exhibition grounds.

Continental presents technology to extend the range of electric vehicles

June 24, 2019 by Anna

At the 32nd Electric Vehicle Symposium last month in Lyon, France, experts from Continental‘s powertrain business gave presentations on innovations for a more efficient electromobility.

As the general interest in electromobility and electric vehicles (EVs) is on the up, the company believes it is important to ensure that using an EV is practical on a day-to-day level.

Thermal Management on a system level, for instance, can help to achieve a considerably longer vehicle range despite cold or hot ambient temperatures.

Continental expands logistics center for car aftermarket

May 14, 2019 by David Edwards

Continental has expanded its logistics center in Gross-Rohrheim south of Frankfurt, the site that supplies dealers all over the world with spare parts.

During the course of the second quarter, the technology company will put its new 7,000 sq m warehouse extension into operation, expanding the total available area to 34,000 sq m.

The new logistics area serves as a picking and storage area. It has a separate small parts warehouse with more than 25,000 storage spaces – almost 20,000 more than before – so dealers can also be supplied economically with spare parts in small quantities and with shorter order cycles.

Car2MEC connected driving tests concluded

April 12, 2019 by Anna

Local cloud computing (Multi-access Edge Computing – MEC) is a key enabling technology for connected driving, specifically for driving safety.

It is vitally important that the industries involved in connected driving work closely together to turn the concepts into sustainable business for all parties involved.

These are the main conclusions of the Car2MEC project after two years of intensive trialling and testing by Continental, Deutsche Telekom, Fraunhofer ESK, MHP and Nokia on the A9 motorway digital test track in Germany.

Continental and Vodafone cooperate on road safety

March 6, 2019 by Anna

At the 2019 Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Continental and Vodafone showcased the first results of their innovation partnership.

Last summer, the partners announced that they would be working together to increase road safety. The first results confirm this – state-of-the-art communications technologies such as 5G, cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) and mobile edge computing help to better protect all road users.

The 5G-ready tests are taking place under real-life conditions at Vodafone’s 5G Mobility Lab in Aldenhoven, Germany. A start of series production based on these technologies is planned for the beginning of the 2020s.

Continental unveils augmented reality HUD

February 25, 2019 by Anna

Continental has unveiled an industry-first full-colour demonstrator of an automotive-specific Head-up Display (HUD) based on waveguide technology.

This demonstrator is the result of the joint development with DigiLens Inc., one of the leading experts in projection technology enabled by switchable holographic gratings.

HUDs with graphic augmentations in a real-world view offer intuitive driver support. Embedding the augmentations in the real world makes the driver immediately understand where their attention is required and why.

Continental pioneers tyre tests with self-driving test vehicles

January 16, 2019 by Anna

At its test site in Uvalde, Texas, U.S.A., Continental has commissioned the first driverless tyre test vehicle for a wide range of road surface types.

The aim is to make the test results for Continental’s passenger and light truck tyres more conclusive and minimise the impact of the test procedure on the results. The new test vehicle is based on Continental’s automated Cruising Chauffeur, which was developed for motorways.

The test vehicle is controlled using a satellite-based navigation system. Equipped with camera and radar sensors, the car will be able to react immediately to people, animals, or other unexpected objects on the track, even without a driver.

Continental develops global 5G-hybrid-V2X solution

January 14, 2019 by Anna

Continental is developing a flexible 5G hybrid platform that allows both mobile network communication, and rapid and reliable direct exchange of data, with a first customer already signed up.

Connected vehicles allow drivers and passengers access to state-of-the-art infotainment. They also have the potential to communicate real-time traffic updates and road hazards, and future safety assist functions by communicating directly with other vehicles or the infrastructure, making driving safer and more efficient.

To achieve this, Continental’s Hybrid V2X solution integrates technologies not only for 4G and 5G network access, but also Dedicated Short Range Communication (DSRC) and Cellular-V2X for direct V2X communication.
