Samsung makes ‘industry’s first’ 1 terabyte embedded universal flash storage

Samsung Electronics has begun mass producing the industry’s first one-terabyte (TB) embedded Universal Flash Storage (eUFS) 2.1, for use in next-generation mobile applications.

Four years after introducing the first UFS solution, the 128-gigabyte (GB) eUFS, Samsung has passed the one terabyte threshold in smartphone storage.

Smartphone users will soon have storage capacity comparable to a premium notebook PC, without having to pair their phones with additional memory cards.

NXP and Kalray partner on autonomous driving computer platform

NXP Semiconductors N.V. has announced a new strategic partnership with Kalray, a pioneer in processors for new intelligent systems.

The partnership will combine NXP’s portfolio of functional safety products for ADAS and Central Compute with Kalray’s high-performance intelligent MPPA (Massively Parallel Processor Array) processors.

The new platform is significant because it addresses the performance, safety and near-term commercial needs of levels 2 and 3 driving with an eye to longer-term release in level 4 and 5 autonomous vehicles.

Nvidia opens robotics research lab in Seattle

Nvidia is opening a new robotics research lab in Seattle near the University of Washington campus led by Professor Dieter Fox, senior director of robotics research at Nvidia and professor in the UW Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science and Engineering. (See video below.)

The charter of the lab is to drive breakthrough robotics research to enable the next generation of robots that perform complex manipulation tasks to safely work alongside humans and transform industries such as manufacturing, logistics, healthcare, and more.

Professor Dieter Fox says: “In the past, robotics research has focused on small, independent projects rather than fully integrated systems.
