ABB completes acquisition of GE Industrial Solutions

ABB has completed its acquisition of GE Industrial Solutions (GEIS), GE’s global electrification solutions business. The transaction was announced on September 25, 2017, and is expected to be accretive to operational EPS in the first year.

The $2.6 billion transaction offers substantial value creation potential within ABB, including growth opportunities to be leveraged from coupling ABB’s digital offering, ABB Ability, with the extensive GEIS installed base.

ABB expects to realise approximately $200 million of annual cost synergies in year five.

IMTS: World’s largest industrial technology show to highlight automation trends

The world‘s largest industrial technology show will highlight key automation trends with a view to helping visitors understand how they will affect manufacturing and other sectors.

Organisers of the International Manufacturing Technology Show – scheduled to take place in Chicago, in the US, from September 10th to 15th – say the event will bring people and automation closer together – literally – with exhibits highlighting the benefits of collaborative robots, or “cobots”.

Savioke raises $13.4 million in new funding for its small-item-carrying robot Relay

Service robotics company Savioke has raised $13.4 million in its latest funding round.

New investors in this Series B round included Brain Corp, Swisslog Healthcare, NESIC, and Recruit.

Ascent expands portfolio with ‘faster, more accurate’ aerospace robotics

Ascent Aerospace, a provider of aircraft assembly line integration services, has added Exechon Enterprises’ parallel kinematic robots to its portfolio of manufacturing automation solutions.

Exechon’s Parallel Kinematic Machine technology offers the stiffness of a machine tool with the dynamic 5-axis capability of an articulated-arm robot, for faster, more accurate assembly and higher overall equipment effectiveness.

Spherical robot designed and developed by Airbus, IBM and DLR to be launched into space later today

Later today – at 5.42am EST to be exact – a spherical robot designed and developed by IBM, Airbus and DLR will be launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida aboard a SpaceX rocket on a journey to the International Space Station.

The robot, called “Cimon”, is said to contain “next-level intelligence” and will take part in many scientific experiments on the ISS mission.

Kuka collaborates with architecture organisation and supercar maker McLaren on art project

Industrial robot manufacturer Kuka has teamed up with an architectural organisation and the supercar maker McLaren on an art project, as part of what is called the “McLaren Summer Boutique”.

At the McLaren Summer Boutique in Zurich, Kuka, in collaboration with McLaren Zurich and the Association for Robots in Architecture, is presenting an art project based on the latest generation of industrial robots.

The first “Watch Medtech Innovation” idea development challenge, jointly organised by the EPHJ-EPMT-SMT Trade Show and Fondation Inartis, has honoured four winners who will be helped to complete their impressive projects.

The main aim of the “Watch Medtech Innovation” challenge is to foster, support and assist new transdisciplinary projects based on harnessing collective intelligence.

Apworks and Heraeus partner on SAP additive manufacturing

SAP, Apworks and Heraeus have joined forces. The companies recently announced their support of the innovative application known as SAP Distributed Manufacturing, a collaborative platform that uses new customer tools to accelerate the introduction of additive manufacturing into production and supply chains.

Apworks, a subsidiary of Premium AEROTEC, introduced the integration of this unique platform, titled AMXpert, into the SAP software landscape at the last Hannover Messe trade fair.

The Apworks tool mainly helps users in solving one of the central issues of additive manufacturing, namely, how to identify components with potential for metallic 3D printing.

Microtechnology event EPHJ has honoured SY&SE with this year’s 2018 exhibitors’ grand prize.

In a break with technological tradition, the young start-up from La Chaux-de-Fonds has created a sensation with the revolutionary new material bonding technology intended to replace glue or other welding techniques.
