BMW Group makes a million 3D-printed components in 10 years

November 26, 2018 by Anna

At the BMW Group, the use of 3D-printed components is on the rise.

Over the last decade alone, the company produced a million parts by this innovative method, and this year output from the BMW Group Additive Manufacturing Center is expected to reach over 200,000 components — a 42 percent increase on last year’s total.

Dr. Jens Ertel, Director of the BMW Group Additive Manufacturing Center: “The use of components made by additive manufacturing in series production of vehicles is increasing particularly strongly at the moment.

Siemens launches additive manufacturing process simulation solution

November 19, 2018 by Anna

Siemens has announced a new additive manufacturing (AM) process simulation solution for predicting distortion during 3D printing.

The product is fully integrated into Siemens’ end-to-end AM solution, which assists manufacturers in designing and printing parts at scale.

Building on Siemens’ comprehensive digital innovation platform and the Simcenter portfolio, the AM Process Simulation solution uses a digital twin to simulate the build process prior to printing, anticipating distortion within the printing process and automatically generating the corrected geometry to compensate for these distortions.

Autodesk University 2018 kicks off in Las Vegas

November 13, 2018 by Anna

10,000 architects, designers, engineers and digital artists have gathered this week in Las Vegas, USA, for Autodesk University (AU), the annual Autodesk, Inc. conference for over four days of learning, networking and knowledge sharing.

In the AU General Session, Autodesk President and CEO Andrew Anagnost will share his perspective on how automation, the convergence of design and make technologies, and the changing nature of work can unlock opportunities to do more, better, with less negative impact on the world.

He will be joined by several guests, including Autodesk CTO Scott Bourdin, Autodesk Director of Robotics Erin Bradner, and author of “Imagine It Forward” and former GE Vice Chair, Beth Comstock.

STMicroelectronics releases ‘always-on’ inertial measurement unit

October 29, 2018 by David Edwards

stmicroelectronics factory

STMicroelectronics has launched what it describes as an “always-on” inertial measurement unit which “improves accuracy and optimizes system power”.

The LSM6DSO iNEMO Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) from STMicroelectronics is an always-on 3D accelerometer and 3D gyroscope system-in-package that is, by itself, extremely power efficient and accurate.

At the same time, the IMU makes the entire embedded system around it more power efficient, too.  [Read more…] about STMicroelectronics releases ‘always-on’ inertial measurement unit

Volkswagen takes first step on road to 3D car production

September 12, 2018 by Anna

Volkswagen will use a new 3D printing process to print design elements such as individualised gear knobs in small production series and is pressing ahead with the development of the technology for mass production.

Volkswagen is using the “HP Metal Jet” process, which it claimed to simplify and speed up metallic 3D printing. The biggest advantage claimed: productivity improves fifty times compared with other 3D printing methods and depending on the component.

Together with printer manufacturer HP and component manufacturer GKN Powder Metallurgy, Volkswagen  presented the new process for the first time at the International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) in Chicago.
